The street and highway system comprises the majority of the transportation infrastructure within the metropolitan area. The highway system includes Interstate Highways 35, 80, and 235; U.S. Highways 6, 65, and 69; and Iowa Highways 5, 17, 28, 141, 163, and 415. |

The MPO works with the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration to maintain the Federal Functional Classification System in the metropolitan area. This classification hierarchy identifies the street and highway segments eligible for federal aid. There are four main classifications: principal arterials, minor arterials, collectors, and local streets. Only those classified as collector or higher are eligible for federal funds. |

The MPO utilizes its Travel Demand Model (TDM) to analyze existing, committed, planned, and proposed street and highway capital improvements within the metropolitan planning area. The MPO implements Transportation Analysis and Simulation (TRANSIMS) travel demand modeling software. This program is a fully integrated, agent-based travel simulation system that projects the daily travel patterns of individual trip makers.
