Freight System

Heartland Highway Freight Corridor Consortium
The Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission, the Area 15 Regional Planning Commission, the Central Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance, and the MPO completed the Trans-Iowa/Illinois Freight Corridor Study. The corridor includes U.S. Highway 34, U.S. Highway 63, and Iowa Highway 163, from Galesburg, Illinois, northwesterly to Pleasant Hill, Iowa. The study sought to educate the corridor's decision makers and citizens about the corridor's freight-carrying and economic development potential. As a follow-up to this study, the Heartland Highway Freight Corridor Consortium was created. It involves public and private sector representatives and seeks to implement the study's recommendations and to foster coordinated decision-making along the corridor.
Port Des Moines
The MPO and the Greater Des Moines Partnership recently launched the Port Des Moines website to assist central Iowa businesses interested in domestic and international trade. Central Iowa's location along Interstates 80 and 35, its multiple railroads, the Des Moines International Airport, and a Foreign Trade Zone offer opportunities for organizations to expand their global reach. This new website provides easy access to information and to connect to local trade experts.

The mission of Port Des Moines is to facilitate international and domestic commerce, support export and import opportunities, and encourage economic competitiveness and growth by providing users a single virtual location for all services related to trade and transportation. The website functions as a portal to these resources and is updated frequently. There is currently no charge for organizations that want to be included on the site.
