Transportation planning data is a key ingredient of the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Transportation Planning process

The Des Moines Area MPO produces an array of planning projects which anaylize raw data and provide vision for the regions future.
The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Central Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance are analyzing the U.S. Census 2000 information as it becomes available for the State of Iowa.  Various tables and maps, which have been created by the Des Moines Area MPO staff, are available.

The 2000 U.S. Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) is available on AASTHO's website. The CTPP is a set of special tabulations from the decennial census designed for transportation planners.  CTPP contains tabulations by place of residence, place of work, and for flows between home and work.  For more information about the CTPP visit the US DOT's website.

Travel Time Survey
The National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) was conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation from April 2001 through May 2002. A total of 25,721 households nationwide were survey. This federal transportation survey collected a detailed account of traveler and trip information about all trips made by all means, whether biking or walking, bus, car, or even by plane. Trips of all distances are included-from very short trips to the corner store to trips across the ocean. The preliminary results of the National Survey are available at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. For more information about the NHTS visit the Bureau of Transportation Statistics NHTS website.

In cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is participating in the NHTS Add-on Program. Under this program, an additional 1,231 households were surveyed in the Des Moines metropolitan area. The NHTS Add-on survey was conducted in the Des Moines metropolitan area from June 2001 to June 2002.

Households were randomly selected for participation in Dallas, Madison, Polk, and Warren Counties for the Des Moines Area MPO Add-on Sample. The randomly selected households received an endorsement letter informing them that they had been selected and provided more information about the survey. The households selected for the survey were then contacted by telephone for a short interview, and were sent a trip diary for each member of the household to keep track of their travel for one day. To increase survey response rates, a small cash incentive was included with the letter. Participation by the sampled residents was voluntary.

The traveler and trip data collected by the survey will be used by the Des Moines Area MPO and the U.S. Department of Transportation to understand how well the transportation system is working and to plan for transportation in the future.
