The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization worked with the Metro Area Planning Directors', who meet under the direction of the Metro Advisory council, to define generalized land use classifications for the creation of a metropolitan area comprehensive future land use map, Comphrensive Plan Compilation Map. The intent of developing generalized classifications and map is not to suggest changes to any land use plan, but rather to develop a template for the metropolitan area to consistently map the land use plans of all the governments for general transportation, water, waste water, solid waste, and other planning purposes.

The Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) continues to investigate the relationship between transportation and land use. The Des Moines Area MPO understands that there is a link between transportation and land use, but the direction of that link is under debate. Does land use development come first followed by infrastructure development, or does land use development follow infrastructure development. The Des Moines Area MPO is continuing to work to understand the relationship between transportation and land use.
