Bicycle & Pedestrian Roundtable
Last Updated Tuesday, July 31, 2007

The Central Iowa Bicycle-Pedestrian Roundtable (Bike-Ped Roundtable) was formed at the request of several trail enthusiasts in central Iowa .  The Bike-Ped Roundtable includes the planning areas of the Central Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance (CIRTPA), the Ames Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (DMAMPO).  Since the inception of the Bike-Ped Roundtable in 2004, this group has expanded to include local parks and recreational staff, CIRTPA representatives and staff, DMAMPO representatives and staff, Ames Area MPO staff, other organizations involved with trails, and interested citizens.

The Bike-Ped Roundtable serves eight counties in central Iowa (Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Polk, Story, and Warren) and attempts to promote a comprehensive, coordinated, and continuing transportation system in the development of all bicycle and pedestrian facilities.  In addition, this roundtable addresses a wide range of specific issues including funding sources; regional signage system; communication media; trail project prioritization, complete streets practices; maps and inventory; advocacy; education; maintenance; encouragement; safety; enforcement; and engineering design standards.

The DMAMPO Transportation Technical Committee and DMAMPO Transportation Policy Committee identify the Bike-Ped Roundtable as an advisory committee on matters related to bicycle and pedestrian transportation modes.  The DMAMPO utilizes the expertise of the Bike-Ped Roundtable to evaluate and score funding applications for Surface Transportation Program Transportation Enhancements (STP TE) funds for trail system enhancements.  Many members of the Bike-Ped Roundtable assisted the DMAMPO in developing the evaluation criteria and application forms used by member governments to apply for STP TE funding.  The Bike-Ped Roundtable is also responsible for submitting all bicycle and pedestrian trail projects to the DMAMPO for inclusion on the Priority Project list used by the Greater Des Moines Partnership for its annual lobbying trip to Washington D.C.

The Central Iowa Bicycle-Pedestrian Roundtable meetings convene the third Tuesday of each month, at 12:00 p.m., in the DMAMPO Meeting Room located in the Merle Hay Centre, 6200 Aurora Avenue, Suite 300W, Urbandale, I owa
